I have received a letter from a debt collection agency for a debt over ten years old. Am I still responsible for the debt being I don't know what it is for?
The statute of limitations varies from state to state and also by type of debt and agreement. Here is a list of all of the statutes: http://www.expert-credit-advice.com/sta ... ations.htm Most states are under 10 years, which would mean that you are not liable however, it is common for debt collectors to continue to try to collect which is still legal. If harassment is occurring you do have options. Send a validation demand requesting validation of the date of last activity, amount or whatever else you are in question over; if they do not respond within a reasonable time, they must back off. You can also send a cease and desist demand to legally force them to quit contacting you by mail or you can sue for harassment. Here is an article on my website that may appeal to you: http://www.expert-credit-advice.com/junk_debt.htm.
